About

Rivernstream Consulting was established in 2021 by Marguerite Young to offer consulting services to labor organizations, environmental justice groups, funders, local government entities and others seeking equity-focused strategic advice in their efforts to achieve climate and environmental justice, to build resilient communities, and create family-sustaining union jobs.

Marguerite is a lifelong activist with nearly 40 years of accomplishment and leadership as an organizer, policy advocate, and coalition builder on behalf of the environment and workers. She is a subject matter expert in the labor climate nexus, water quality, climate equity, and responsible investment.

Since 2017 Marguerite has helped guide the implementation of the climate equity and environmental justice program at SEIU, the nation's largest labor union. Most recently she has been at the forefront of the union's efforts to include investment in social infrastructure as an essential component of building community resilience to the impacts of climate change.

As California Director of Clean Water Action, Marguerite drove the adoption of numerous water quality standards, led the water quality committee for the CalFed Bay Delta process, and was one of the founders of the Environmental Justice Coalition for Water. She remains active as a board member of the organization.

In addition, she is an elected local official who represents Ward 3 of the East Bay Municipal Utility District, California's second largest public water agency, and is immediate past President of the Board. Water agencies are ground zero for the impacts of climate change and she believes EBMUD can and should be a national leader in demonstrating climate-smart actions as well as advocating for water affordability solutions.

When she's not working, Marguerite enjoys camping with her teardrop trailer, whitewater kayaking, making stained glass mosaics and quilts, but most especially hanging out with her grandaughter Rhea.
